Snazzy Snippets: Messy Families

If you are looking at this post going 'Snazzy Snippets? What is this?' you need to visit Alyssa and read up. If you don't know Alyssa's blog then you're missing out- she's a talented writer! In the meantime, here's the basic idea:

"...It’s an opportunity for writers! Every two months, we post a prompt or question for you to share a snippet of less than 500 words. It’s designed to let you have fun, analyse your work on a smaller level, or just write something to join in."

This month there are three prompts, and I've decided to use two of them. And I'm posting a new story as well- new year, new story to write. This one is about a rich family, their dark underbelly and a girl who decides to infiltrate their ranks to get her revenge.

I'm writing in third person, which isn't something I've done (other than in short pieces) for over a year, and it's hard getting out of the rhythm of first person. But otherwise I'm enjoying it so far. I hope you like the snippets!

A snippet of 16 words or fewer
‘But he agreed?’
‘Father.’ Slate sounded insulted.

A snippet about something new
‘Hello.’ Slate called, gestured for her to come into the house. The drizzle didn’t seem to bother her, and he liked that.
The second thing Slate noticed was that she was skinny, but with the ease that she carried her suitcase, it wasn’t an unhealthy sort of skinny like some of his cousins. The third he picked up as she entered the foyer, rain clinging to her long, dark brown hair. She was curled into herself, not because she felt small, but because she wanted to be small.

Have you linked up? Are you going to? Leave me your link! How is your writing going so far in this new year?
Opal likes writing about messy families and messy people and the things they get up to. Whether it works out... We'll see.

  1. Thank you for linking up and for the kind words :) Ooh, the 16 word snippet is very intriguing -- sounds like quite the interesting father-son relationship! And the new character in the third snippet sounds fabulous too :) Great snippets!

  2. Oooh, I am intrigued. I love your characterizations, even in a snippet that short. :)

  3. I love the intro for the new character, and I can really get a sense of who she is even in that short snippet!

    1. Thanks! That makes me so happy to hear :)

  4. Oooh, Slate sounds like a person I want to get to know more! Thanks for linking up and sharing your writing with us!
